Port of
Vitória

The first private port in Brazil, with Vports being the port authority responsible for managing the Vitória, Vila Velha and Barra do Riacho Terminals, in Espírito Santo.

History

The Port of Vitória is located in the center of Vitória, capital of ES, in the Vitória Bay area, covering the municipalities of Vitória and Vila Velha. It was created in 1906 and is under the jurisdiction of VPorts, which has been the Private Port Authority of Espírito Santo since 2022, whereas previously the authority in charge of the Port was CODESA, Companhia Docas do Espírito Santo. Its history is deeply related to the growth of coffee culture.

The first studies for the construction of the Port of Vitória date back to 1881. In 1906, the Federal Government authorized the Companhia Porto de Vitória (CPV) to build 1,130 m of pier. In 1924, the Union took over the concession given to the CPV and transferred it to the State Government. This first phase of construction would only end in 1927. The following year, the second phase of the work at Cais de Vitória was approved, which included the construction of warehouses I and II.

The inauguration took place in 1940, marking the beginning of the current port complex. Still in the 1940s, CVRD set up the ore loading station in Vila Velha, followed by the construction of the Liquid Bulk Terminal and the installation of Cais de Paul.

In the 1970s, Capuaba Pier was opened in Vila Velha. Five years later, an ordinance from the Ministry of Transport established the Organized Port area of Vitória (municipalities of Vitória and Vila Velha) and Barra do Riacho (Aracruz). In 2022, management of the Organized Port was granted to Vports, until then the Port Authority responsible for the area.
